Why is there taxes to pay? I am returning an item I purchased from them and I paid taxes when I received it in New Zealand.

Would you please check on a parcel I sent from New Zealand to my son who is living in Beijing. The New Zealand Post tracking number is EP559083729NZ. The most recent update on this tracking number was on 19 December 2025, but nothing has happened since then, and no-one has contacted me or my son about it. The message just says it is with overseas border agencies for processing. Please help!

Your parcel is stuck because, from Chinese customs' perspective, it is considered a new import, not a simple return, unless specific and well-documented conditions are met. The taxes requested (Customs Duty and Import VAT) are standard charges for goods entering China.

Contact the Seller (Receiver) Immediately: Explain this is a return of a purchase you made from them. Ask if they declared the shipment to customs as a "return of defective goods" and provided the original export paperwork. If not, the standard tax rules apply.
Discuss Responsibility: Since you are returning the item, the seller should ideally cover these taxes as part of their returns policy. Negotiate with them to ensure they complete the payment to release your parcel.
If the seller in China is unwilling to help or pay, your options become limited. You may have to decide whether to ask them to refuse the parcel (which would likely result in it being returned to you in New Zealand) or, as a last resort, consider covering the tax cost yourself to complete the return.
